Gastronomy

Naxos’ cuisine is famous for its simplicity, variety but above all, for a great strong taste that is a result of the abundance of fresh material. Herbs, exceptional olive oil and high quality meat are produced on the island.

Naxos is famous for products such as potatoes, dairy products, citrus, wine, thyme honey and many other showing that Naxos has a tradition of quality Greek cuisine and pastry making.

Food is a big part of everyday life in Naxos Greece. There are many taverns and restaurants, right on the beach and in the charming alleyways that serve both local delicacies and a variety of international cuisine.

Sports

For sports fans, the island of Naxos provides many choices, especially for sports relating to summer and to the sea.

The north winds (named “meltemi”) that blow during the most part of the summer months, create the ideal conditions for those rabid fans of windsurfing who inundate the island every year; thereby rising to prominence on Naxos island as the “king of sports”.

The long Naxos land expanse and the existence of Za (the highest mountain in the Cyclades) shapes unique hiking trips or mountaineering and has helped bring about the spread of trekking as well as mountain biking. From the island they couldn’t possibly miss water summer sports (like water skiing, and other fun sports), while Naxos also offers choices of athletic exercise in sports such as mini soccer, beach volleyball etc.

Culture

Naxos has a vivid nightlife. And it was not possible the island of goodtime, dance and music, not to have a good nightlife.

Night can start in the evening with a drink on a bar or a beach bar watching the sunset and continue with clubbing in one of the big clubs.

Many cultural events are organised every year – especially during the summer period – by the Municipality of Naxos, the Municipality of Drimalia and the Della Rocca-Barozzi Tower.

The Naxos Festival at Bazeos Tower, which began in the summer of 2001, was a bold and imaginative move to transform an exceptional 17th century landmark monument into a temple of learning and culture, fulfilling its original purpose in the present-day. It is an institution, open to the cultural issues and demands of our time. An institution whose identity is located in the creative interaction of the arts and their representatives, within the specific thematic axis selected for each occasion.
